The Gift of a Rocking Chair We often have surprises in the works. Many rockers we build are ordered by someone for another. Fathers to be order chairs for mothers to be. Grandparents to be order chairs for their expecting children, children order for parents, wives for husbands, husbands for wives, friends for friends. Employers give rocking chairs to appreciated and deserving associates, maybe retiring, maybe staying on. Companies and corporations send rockers to customers, vendors, and executives.
I am sure there is no other piece of furniture that is more meaningful as a gift, and I am inclined to think a rocking chair is as meaningful as gifts get. I can only list words to define this meaning: comfort, secure, contented, warm, relaxed, enfolded, hearth, home, family, nurture, sustain, respite, graceful — quite a collection of benefits to give someone. Rockers for gifts are often made personal by an inlay, engraving, or plaque. We can inlay initials, symbols, logos, ranch brands, etc. into chairbacks. We can engrave dates, names, and other (limited) lines of text into chairbacks. We can have a bronze plaque made for the bottom of the chair with many words of choice. We provide a proof for approval by mail, email, or FAX to show how these ornaments will appear. We can keep a secret. We can coordinate delivery so the secret is maintained as long as possible. Given lead-time, we can have a rocking chair delivered just before or on significant dates.* We get to savor a bit of the fun.
*For all of 2004, 2005, and 2006 we did not miss a ship-date that we quoted at the time of order. I failed to order cherry at the right time and four chairs were delayed two weeks in 2007.
