Extension Dining TablesIt is nice to fit the table to the occasion. We can build any "leg and apron" table to suit the space and the seating — with or without leaves. If the table has no leaves (fixed top), the top boards run with the long dimension. If the table has leaves (extension top) the top boards run with the short dimension. (See Solid Wood Dining Table Top for an explanation of how we select wood for a top.) If an extension table is to be longer than 102" we add two legs in the center to prevent sagging. These center legs are together when the table is set up without leaves. They spread apart as the table is extended. In leg and apron, extension dining tables, these "stock" sizes come with two 18" wide leaves.

We also build a pedestal dining table that opens for leaves, the Johnson Pedestal Table. These are photos of a 54" diameter table with and without its 20" leaf. Johnson Pedestal Table extension configurations
